Villa Carlos Paz
Córdoba Province
- Argentina
Disappointment
I had always wanted to visit Villa Carlos Paz and finally I had the chance to do so. Villa Carlos Paz is located 725 km far from the City of Buenos Aires, 35 km far from the Capital of Córdoba and alongside the San Roque lake. The village has about 40 thousand inhabitants. I had always heard of Villa Carlos Paz because many theater shows take place in the village during the summer. Most artists in Argentina spend the summer season working in Mar del Plata or Villa Carlos Paz mainly. Perhaps for that reason I assumed that Villa Carlos Paz was as stunning as Mar del Plata, but the word that better describes my feeling is disappointment. The village caused me no excitement at all and although there are places of natural beauty, those are overshadowed by a bunch of people shouting and drinking beer by the river. The most typical tourist attraction in the village is the cuckoo clock. Defining "that" as a tourist attraction is absolutely generous, because it's only an insignificant piece of wood. Don't waste your time with that, it is a crap :) Perhaps my trip was too short and the time I spent there was not enough to discover the beauties of the village, but as far as I've seen I would definitely not recommend Villa Carlos Paz as a travel destination.
Where to eat:
There are many places where you can eat, although quality may vary greatly. Prices were really low (at least in December). I once visited a restaurant and soon after I came in, a bloke began to sing songs from several decades ago. At first there was nothing wrong with that, but when I realized it was an absolute non-stop performance I began to get upset. During one full hour the karaoke guy didn't stop to interpret unbearable hits out loud so that you couldn't even talk. If you plan to eat out, please ask if any show is planned!
Traveler's nightmare: The horde of wild students from elementary school who take posession of the streets and go shouting at any time, jeopardizing traffic circulation and even menacing drivers - that was undoubtely the worst part of my trip. Most of those offsprings were certainly experiencing their first trip alone and that seems to make them behave as semi-delinquents.
Things you should not miss: Don't miss the cableway, even though local photographers kind of screw it up (they will bother every tourist trying to make them buy "that" photo). When you are up there, go to the cafe and order local "Cordova" beer while you watch the city from above. This is one of the best experiences in town. You can also try some horseback riding, which is an interesting opportunity to explore the surroundings (as long as you are given a horse with the appropriate saddles).
